Start this June off with a fun, family friendly, and important celebration: The Annual Riverside County Juneteenth Celebration. 2013 marks the 13th year of this celebration, which will take place on June 1.
Juneteenth is more than just a celebration: it’s a holiday. It celebrates the emancipation of African Americans in the United States from the bonds of slavery. In September of 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery. The Civil War ended in April; however, the last African Americans were not informed of their freedom until June. Hence, this celebration is held in the month of June.
