Come out and celebrate the Mexican culture and influence that abounds in our beautiful corner of the world.
Starting Friday, Sept. 19, and running through the whole weekend, you can find events celebrating the Mexican folk music known as Mariachi. This form of music dates back as far as the 16th century, before the Spanish conquest of Mexico, when the indigenous music was played with rattles, drums, flutes, and conch-shell horns as part of religious celebrations.
Mariachi is sure to be a sensational experience, from the colors and textures of the traditional costumes to the unique sound of the music. Dance is a huge part of this genre, characterized by sharp jabs of the heel in quick, syncopated rhythms.
The Riverside Mariachi Festival will feature our very own local Mariachi dance troupe, the Ballet Folklorico de Riverside, which has been around since 1977. The dancers perform traditional Mexican folk dances that are based on stories and rituals that have been passed down from generation to generation.
The weekend will feature a festival of music, dance, and arts competitions showcasing the Hispanic culture, not to mention delicious food. All of the events will take place at Fairmount Park at 2601 Fairmount Boulevard. For a detailed line-up and for more information, visit the city of Riverside community calendar. You can find the application packets for the various arts competitions on the Riverside website, as well.
All of us at Greenberg, Greenberg & Kenyon, APLC encourage you to come out and get a taste of a culture that is such a big part of our community.
